A Do Nothing Faith

A Do Nothing Faith

From the beginning of time, God had something for man to do. Genesis 2:15 “And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.” The very first thing that happened with Adam after God created him is that God gave him a job to do. If we think about this, the same thing is true for you and me today.

I have a job to do for the Lord. You have a job to do for the Lord. Your job may be much different than my job, but it is still the job for the Lord. We have a man who has been willing to cook a Sunday afternoon dinner for everyone in our church. I am so glad for that. It is not a job I want, so I am very thankful that the Lord gave him that job and not me.

The ongoing statistic that comes from churches is this. 20% of the people do 80% of the work. Why is that? It is because there are a lot of people out there who don’t do anything for the Lord. The problem with that is found in Romans 12:1. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” Every one of us has a reasonable service.

Someone can clean the church. Someone can take care of the dishes. Someone can take out the trash. Someone can get the mail. Someone can send birthday cards. Someone can make phone calls. Someone can shop for supplies. Someone can make sure the hymnals are in the right place. Someone can fold the bulletins. Everyone can visit and pass out tracts.

If you are not willing to be a someone, then this must mean you have a do nothing faith. Why? Because you do nothing. You say, “Pastor, my presence is your present.” I say you are called to be faithful to church and to serve in church. God says that. It is your “reasonable service.”

If the very first thing that God did when he created man was to put that man to work serving Him, don’t you think God is still putting people to work serving Him today. The answer is absolutely YES! In James 2:20, we read “But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” I did not say that, but God did. If you are not serving in your local church, start today! Please, let’s not have a do nothing faith!
