On the Fringe With Your Bible

On the Fringe With Your Bible

Most times when people talk about being on the fringe, it is being on the edge of something. A fringe is actually a woven or braided piece of material that is attached at the outer edge of a garment. It is from that context that people speak of those being on the fringe, or actions that are on the fringe as being on the edge of what is acceptable.

In Numbers 15 the people were commanded to make fringe for their garments that they might look at them and be reminded of what was central to life. Numbers 15:39-40 “And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring: That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God.”

We do not need to attach fringe to the edge of our garments. We have the Bible. They did not. God’s reminders, however, are still just as real.  We need to remember the commandments of the Lord. We need to seek after the things of God not the lusts of this world. We need to practice holiness unto the Lord.

None of these things will become real in our lives if we keep the Bible on the outer edge of our existence.  Scripture is central to living for God. Let’s not live with the Bible on the edge of our lives, but rather as the focus of our lives. It is a great way to live, not on the fringe, but in the center of His blessings.
